Daniel Kingsbury is a 20-year old singer/songwriter with over 100 original songs to his credit. His catchy melodies have been considered uplifting, soothing, and haunting and his style can be described as folksy, contemporary acoustic pop, in the manner of Jack Johnson. Daniel’s poetic lyrics are threaded with the ocean and mountains of the West Coast landscape and are both profound and thought-provoking, and reminiscent of Bob Dylan, one of his musical influences. Daniel’s deep, smooth and soulful singing and his precise, acoustic guitar playing are signatures of his sound. Daniel has performed in San Francisco, Toronto and at countless venues in southwestern British Columbia, including the 2007 New Music West Festival where he was recently showcased. He made his first demo CD in 2004 and is in the process of completing a full-length CD, to be released in the summer of 2007. He has also been featured on two compilation CD’s. He was Sheryl MacKay’s guest on CBC Radio’s “North by Northwest” in 2005 and four of his songs were used in the Canadian documentary film, “Hope for the Future.” Daniel’s musical talents and community involvement have been recognized in the form of numerous scholarships. In his last year of high school, Daniel was the inspiration behind a very special project where he encouraged and mentored Grade 12 musicians to participate in a recording for the label he spearheaded, Waking Life Records. Daniel produced a double-disc CD of original music, “Waking Life”, which was written, performed and recorded by the students. Within four months, $8000 was raised from album sales and promotional concerts. The money was donated to the Sunshine Coast Community Services Society to go towards music programming for youth. In addition to his passion for music, Daniel is an accomplished filmmaker, having won the award for Best Film on Mountain Sports at the 2002 Banff Mountain Film Festival, for his film “The Essence of Adolescence.” He was 15 at the time and the youngest filmmaker ever, to have won an award at this international festival. Daniel is currently enrolled at the University of Victoria.
